Academy Scholarship Opportunities

A limited number of need-based scholarships may be available for eligible participants. These scholarships may cover tuition, travel, and boarding expenses.

To apply, begin by completing the Academy's online registration form. During the registration process, you will be asked to upload a scholarship letter that outlines your financial need and explains your interest in attending the Academy.

Scholarship applicants will be evaluated based on their career and educational achievements, financial circumstances, and the unique perspectives they bring to the Academy community.

The deadline to apply for a scholarship and submit all required documentation is November 3, 2025. Selected recipients will be notified by November 17, 2025.

Mark Smith Academy Scholarship Endowment Fund
Established in honor of longtime Academy leader Mark Smith, this fund supports scholarships for individuals who would otherwise be unable to attend the Academy of American and International Law. Mark was deeply committed to inclusivity, intellectual growth, and the advancement of the rule of law. The fund continues his legacy by helping participants from diverse backgrounds access the Academy’s life-changing educational experience.

Vester Hughes Fellows Fund

The Vester Hughes Fellows Fund was established in 2021 to honor the late Vester T. Hughes Jr., a distinguished attorney and dedicated supporter and former CAIL trustee, by supporting educational opportunities for international legal professionals. The Fellowships have paved the way for numerous legal professionals worldwide to enhance their knowledge and skills through their participation in the Academy and their support of the rule of law.

Victor Folsom Fellowships

The Victor Folsom Fellowships were established to honor Victor Folsom, a longtime supporter of the Academy of American and International Law, and his wife Vicki. A former chair of the SWIICL Advisory Board and frequent lecturer at the Academy, Mr. Folsom was known for his enduring friendships with participants from around the world. Through the Folsoms’ generosity, these fellowships help make the Academy experience more accessible to promising international legal professionals. The fellowships play a vital role in supporting participants from a wide range of countries and regions.
